چکیده

The most important reef of the Mediterranean is Coralligène (Coralligenous = C), including several types calcareous algal-invertebrate build-ups growing in normal open marine conditions. We analyzed and compared two C samples from Ligurian Sea developed different environmental settings: 1) off Portofino on a rocky cliff, at depth about 40 m 2) front Bogliasco, sub-horizontal substrate 10 m. maximum AMS radiocarbon dating provided an older age for Bogliasco (about 5 ka BP) than 3.6 BP), mean accumulation rate build-up 80 µm y ?1 ) was found to be higher one 65 ). sides each showed remarkable heterogeneity dominant cover by living organisms, comparison between highlighted evident diversity their taxonomic composition structure, although crustose coralline algae (CCA) are framework builder major autogenic ecosystem engineers both localities, present as past millennia. Other components structure bryozoans serpulids, role played sediment filling. In extreme climate events peaks fine matrix terrigenous grains observed, lithologically related drainage basin Poggio creek associated with charophyte occurrence reduced CCA abundance. rare Sporolithon ptychoides observed 750 BCE Bogliasco. These phases likely warm humid spells punctuating Holocene fluctuations Sea. Because confirmed habitat engineer reefs, they deserve more attention any monitoring initiative aimed management conservation.

Chemical mediation of coral larval settlement by crustose coralline algae

The majority of marine invertebrates produce dispersive larvae which, in order to complete their life cycles, must attach and metamorphose into benthic forms. This process, collectively referred to as settlement, is often guided by habitat-specific cues. While the sources of such cues are well known, the links between their biological activity, chemical identity, presence and quantification in ...

Pathobiomes Differ between Two Diseases Affecting Reef Building Coralline Algae

Crustose coralline algae (CCA) are major benthic calcifiers that play crucial roles in coral reef ecosystems. Two diseases affecting CCA have recently been investigated: coralline white band syndrome (CWBS) and coralline white patch disease (CWPD). These diseases can trigger major losses in CCA cover on tropical coral reefs, but their causative agents remain unknown. Here, we provide data from ...

Convergence of joint mechanics in independently evolving, articulated coralline algae.

Flexible joints are a key innovation in the evolution of upright coralline algae. These structures have evolved in parallel at least three separate times, allowing the otherwise rigid, calcified thalli of upright corallines to achieve flexibility when subjected to hydrodynamic stress. As all bending occurs at the joints, stress is amplified, which necessitates that joints be made of material th...

Phenotypic plasticity of coralline algae in a High CO2 world

It is important to understand how marine calcifying organisms may acclimatize to ocean acidification to assess their survival over the coming century. We cultured the cold water coralline algae, Lithothamnion glaciale, under elevated pCO2 (408, 566, 770, and 1024 μatm) for 10 months. The results show that the cell (inter and intra) wall thickness is maintained, but there is a reduction in growt...
